The Lavanburg Foundation provides seed grants to organizations working in New York City and its surrounding areas who share our belief that good housing is more than matter of bricks and mortar — that it should also provide the means to build lives through social support.

The photograph depicts the original Lavanburg homes at Baruch Place, which were a successful model for innovative low-income housing in the late 1920s and 30s. The project drew students of housing and sociology from all over the United States and Europe. Policies developed there came to be applied on a grand scale throughout the nation. Once their usefulness as a "project" had been outlived, the Foundation donated the buildings to the city.

Closing

The Fred L. Lavanburg Foundation will officially close on June 30th, 2011. No applications for funding will be accepted.

Since its founding in 1927, our Board of Trustees has had the pleasure of working with many partners to help realize Mr. Lavanburg's belief that a good housing environment is an important key to solving social issues. We are pleased to announce that the files of the Foundation will be available to the public and researchers at the New York Public Library.

We thank the many organizations and volunteers who have been part of our history and wish them much success in the future.
